We have assembled a collection of over 30 varieties of this invaluable little South African bulbous plant which we are now propagating and will offer here soon. Rhodohypoxis originally comes from South Africa. It grows with small, grass like leaves and star shaped flowers. It flowers prolifically over a long period, as much as 4 months given it's favoured conditions. Rhodohypoxis come from areas of high summer rainfall and is found in the high mountains of the north-eastern Cape and Natal especially near Mont-aux-Sources. In these regions it can often be found growing in very wet conditions, indeed it will flower more profusely if watered copiously during the growing season. However when the plant dies down in autumn it demands to be kept dry. We therefore suggest the following method of growing, pot the plants into clay pans using a well drained compost, John Innes No.2 mixed with extra grit and moss peat is ideal, or use a proprietary ericaceous compost. Plunge the pots in your chosen position during the summer and keep well watered, you will be rewarded with red, pink, white or bi-colour flowers from May until September
When the plants begin to fade, stop watering and lift the pot. Place into a cold greenhouse, shed or garage and keep dry overwinter. Guard against mice who find the bulb a winter delicacy. In spring start watering early March and you will be rewarded with a repeat performance. Of course the bulbs may be planted in the garden providing they are given good drainage and in these conditions will be hardy
